Concussion – the Scat Card
Updated: Jul 8, 2021

For AFL fans the latest Fyfe and Viney cases has highlighted the AFL’s response to minimise head injuries.
Having being involved in contact sport both as a player and as a physiotherapist, it is always difficult to correctly manage a concussion. Often at local sporting events a medical doctor is not on hand and the responsibility often falls upon the sports physios, sports trainers, coaches and parents to manage a concussion correctly with player welfare in mind.
With recent media coverage of long term implications of contact sport and its long term effects on brain function head it is imperative correct diagnosis is reached and subsequent medical management. Often opinions of players, coaches and supporters suggest a return to sport without sufficient assessment.

A concussed player must not be allowed to return to school, return to training or playing before having a medical clearance.
