Updated: Sep 17, 2020

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease characterised by joint pain, stiffness and swelling and mainly affects the hands, knees and hips. It most often affects people over 55 years with risk factors including history of joint injury and being over weight.

It is expected that the number of Australia's with Osteoarthritis will rise from 2.2 million in 2015 to 3.3 million by 2030.

More than 100,000 Australian receive hip and knee replacements each year. Is this the most appropriate care?

Exercise is the front runner for best management.

Passive therapies, medications and aids can be offered to those who did not improve with education, exercise and weight control.

Joint replacements can lead to pain reduction of a painful osteoarthritic joint. This should only be offered when exercise and weight loss has been trialled and has not lead to a reduction in pain and an increase in quality of life.
